Perhaps I could have chosen a better day to hike up Lion's Head, as it was extremely hot, however I could not have chosen a better moment. No time like the present to adventure and I am glad that I did!
I was fortunate enough to have some down time at a recent business trip to Cape Town on the 5th March 2018 - which I took advantage of by hiking up Lion's Head.
At first I was concerned with making the walk alone was not the wisest but then I was realised I would not be alone as there the trek was filled with many tourists. There was always a friendly international accent greeting me with encouragement as they passed me by on their decent.
The hike itself was not difficult and is suitable for various ages groups. I am no expert on hiking but here are my five cents when hiking up Lion's Head:
1. DRESS APPROPRIATELY
I embarked on the hike on a hot day, shorts and a t-shirt is ideal with shoes that are steady and comfortable.
2. DON'T HIKE ALONE
From what I have heard from those who have hiked Lion's Head, it is not the best idea to attempt it alone. During my hike the trail was not busy but it was not empty as well. Hiking with a partner would ensure that you are are not alone in the event of an injury and you always need someone to shoot pictures of you ;-)
3. STAY HYDRATED
Ensure you have packed enough water as there aren't any water stops en route to the summit. If possible, carry a watering canister that keeps your water cool. This was a spur of the moment adventure I carried my water which in a plastic bottle which I purchased at the airport. The water was warm midway to the top.
4. SUNBLOCK IS A MUST!
You are exposed to the sun the entire hike. Skin protection is a MUST!
5. CHARGE ALL BATTERIES & CARRY BACK UPS
I am always diligent when it comes to recharging my electronic devices however, for some odd reason all my batteries were low. I had carried by DSLR which I have a spare batter for, my power bank to recharge my iPhone. However, those batteries were low as well. Thankfully, I did manage to get a few shots in before they flat lined.
All in all it was great. Would I do it again? Absolutely! By far, one of the most beautiful views I have ever seen. We have a beautiful country. We just need to take time out of our busy schedules to appreciate it.
To paraphrase someone somewhere, without the ups and downs of mountains and the valleys in our life we would flatline and life would be dead.
I decided to end my Lion's Head adventure with touristy picture form Signal Hill.
Enjoy and share!
